Ballet
Ballet is a
formalized type of performative dance, which originated in sixteenth-and
seventeenth-century French courts, and which was further developed in England,
Italy, and Russia as a concert dance form. The early ballet dancers were not as
highly skilled as they are now. It has since become a highly technical form of
dance with its own vocabulary. It is primarily performed with the accompaniment
of classical music. Louis XIV established France's Académie Royale de
Danse in 1661, where Pierre Beauchamp developed
the five ballet positions. . In the 18th century Jean-Georges Noverre and
Gasparo Angiolini separately developed the dramatic ballet (ballet d'action)
to tell a story through dance steps and mime, a reform echoed in Christoph
Willibald Gluck's music. Significant developments in the early 19th century
included point work (balance on the extreme tip of the toe) and the emergence
of the prima ballerina, exemplified by Marie Taglioni and Fanny Elssler. In the
late 19th and early 20th centuries, Russia became the centre of ballet
production and performance, through
the work of innovators such as Sergey Diaghilev, Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky,
Marius Petipa, and Michel Fokine; great ballets were composed by Pyotr
Tchaikovsky (Swan Lake, The
Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker) and Igor Stravinsky.
In 1909 Diaghilev
brought Russian dance to the West, sparking an international ballet boom that
eventually led to the creation of schools and companies throughout Europe and
America. Since then, ballet schools in Great Britain and the U.S. have elevated ballet in those countries to Russia's
level and greatly increased its audience. See also American Ballet
Theatre; Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; Ballets Russes; Bolshoi Ballet; New York
City Ballet; Royal Ballet.
Through the
twentieth century, the classical technique and the choreographic masterpieces
of the nineteenth century survived, forever preserved, indeed refined in
interpretation, especially by the great ballet companies of Europe and North
America. But ballet (or modern dance as it became known, to distinguish it from
classical ballet) also continued to develop, becoming ever more experimental,
improvised, diverging from the rigours of classical ballet. Isadora Duncan,
Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham are but a few of the leaders in contemporary
dance, in which expression of movement and mood is conveyed through contraction
of the torso, flexing of the feet, parallel position of the legs, and many
other movements that are out of bounds in classical ballet.

Dance and Choreography in
Our Life
Exercise 1. Read and translate the text. Write down
underlined phrases and translate them.
Dance
Dance is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music. It is used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.
Dance may also be as a form of nonverbal
communication between humans. Gymnastics, figure
skating and synchronized
swimming are sports that include dance, while martial
arts are often compared to dances. Dancing is
probably the best way for people of all ages to stay in shape,
because they may choose the style that is appropriate for their personal
needs.
Every dance, no matter what style, has something in common. It
not only involves flexibility and body movement, but also
physics. If the proper physics is not taken into consideration, injuries
may occur. And here we have come to the notion of choreography that is
the art of creating dances. The word “choreography” literally means “dance
–writing” and origins from Greek. In dance, choreography is also known
as dance composition. Dance is the result of choreography. A person who
creates a dance is known as a choreographer.
It is impossible to say when
dance became part of human culture. Dance was an important part of ceremony,
rituals, celebrations and entertainment.
Dance also can be competitive. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, such as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary/symbolic system as in many Asian dances. Dance can embody or express ideas,
emotions or tell a story.
Dancing has evolved many styles. Breakdancing and Krumping are
related to the hip hop culture. African
dance is interpretive. Ballet, Ballroom, Waltz, and Tango are classical styles.

Exercise 10. Read
the text about different art genres.
History paintings are not limited to those depicting ‘historic scenes’. The term derives
from the Italian word ‘istoria’ meaning narrative (story), referring to
paintings showing exemplary deeds and struggles of moral figures. The latter
might include Saints or other Biblical , pagan divinities, mythological heroes
as well as real-life historical figures. The depiction aim is to elevate the
morals of the whole community.
A portrait can be a painting, a sculpture,
a photograph or any other representation of a person in which the face is the
main focus. Traditional portraits usually depict the sitter head-and-shoulders,
half-length or full-bodied. There are several varieties of portraits, including
the traditional portrait of an individual, a group portrait, or a
self-portrait. The aim of a portrait is to depict the character and the unique
attributes of the subject.
A genre painting refers to the pictures
depicting situations and scenes of everyday life, which typically includes
domestic settings, interiors, mealtimes, celebrations, peasant scenes, markets
and other street scenes. In general, the key feature of a genre painting is
that the scene is presented in a non-idealized way.
Landscapes describe a scenic view, for example, meadows, hills, mountains, valleys,
trees, rivers, forests and seascapes. Painters may depict a real or an
idealized scene. Scenic painting portrayed the divine harmony of nature and a calm
confidence in current climatic prosperity. Many painters focus their attention
on the atmospheric effect, dissolved into a haze of colour and light, to
express their feelings for nature’s grandeur and immensities.
A still life denotes a specific genre of
painting which includes the objects (flowers, kitchen utensils ) laid out specifically by the artist.
Some contain complex messages. The objects displayed may be symbols presenting
a political, moral, or spiritual message. Still life picture may be classified
into 4 groups:
- flower arrangements;
- Breakfast arrangements;
- animal arrangements;
-
Symbolic arrangements

Music isn't only a combination of pleasant sounds. It
is an art which reflects life. If we were asked to explain the purpose of
music, our immediate reply might be "to give pleasure". That would
not be far from the truth, but there are other considerations. We might also
define music as "expression in sound", or "the expression of
thought and feeling in an aesthetic form. Listening to music can be an
emotional experience or an intellectual exercise.
Music, like language, is a living, moving thing. To
many people in many cultures, music is an important part of their way of life.
Music is composed and performed for many purposes,
ranging from aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, or as an
entertainment product for the marketplace. It goes without saying that music
plays a very important role in people's lives. It reflects our moods and
emotions. Music appeals to our hearts
and transforms our feelings. It conquers our souls and enriches our minds.
Besides, listening to music is the perfect way to spend free time and not to
feel bored. You can hardly find a person who doesn't like or need music and who
never sings or dances.
Music is beauty in sounds; it is our magic source of
inspiration. Millions of
people like music and can't imagine their life without it. Music affects the
emotions in different ways. Music arouses deep emotions and makes people think.
It gives people new energy and optimism, besides music is a wonderful rest, a
good way to remove from tiredness and tension, it may just clam a person.
People like different music. Some enjoy only formal music of the 18th century;
others prefer romantic music; still others respond only to the modern music of
today. There are those who enjoy none of these kinds of music, but the simple
folk music of the countryside. The life of a man is very different, sometimes
happy, and sometimes dramatic; music gives us possibility to find new strength,
to get new energy and desires. That is why each generation and every epoch have
their own music to express their desires, hopes and ideas.

Actors and actresses play the leading role in film
making. Much depends upon the talent of the actor. Only few of them become
stars. The greatest achievement in actor’s profession is getting Oscar.
The Academy Awards are given every year by the US
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“Oscars” are supposed to have got their name because
they looked like the Uncle Oscar of Margaret Herrick, a lady who worked in the
Academy film library.
The first Academy Awards ceremony took place out of
the public eye during an Academy banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Two
hundred seventy people attended the May 16, 1929 dinner in the hotel’s Blossom
Room.
The 1st Awards presented two special awards at the
very first ceremony in 1929: one to Warner Bros. for producing the pioneering

directing, writing and starring in “The Circus.”
